By 9 ceramic bowls, Yurim Gough untangles the sophisticated narratives encompassing effectiveness, appearance, and gender fluidity. Her id-centric pieces—which are infused with levels of pencil renderings, thread, and other supplies that can require just about a dozen rounds of firing at a number of temperatures to complete—depict figures outfitted with ostentatious costumes and elaborately painted faces. Drawing on elements of queer lifestyle, Gough’s vessels are disruptive and revisionary, at the same time exposing the dated and manufactured nature of classic gender groups whilst reveling in the history of those people who’ve subverted norms.

Gough’s gold-trimmed collection will be on watch as component of Salvage, a team exhibition curated by Colossal’s Founder and Editor-in-Chief Christopher Jobson at Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia. Opening tonight, January 22, Salvage shares how artists are revitalizing fragments of tradition and culture that were destined to be missing, relegated to the periphery, or buried for good. The exhibition, which you can tour just about, launches with a live discuss with Jobson, Gough, André Schulze (formerly), and Debra Broz (earlier)—tickets are readily available on Eventbrite—and operates by means of February 20.

Now primarily based in the U.K., the South Korean artist has a qualifications in trend. Examine more of her work, which incorporates a selection of self-portraiture and concerns of modern day tradition, on her web page and Instagram.
